Holiday play list prototype

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 12:14 AM
There are so many things so many of us would deem "the worst thing about the holiday season." My "worst thing" is Christmas music, which would piss me off even if I were Christian. To which end I heartily declare that the finest birthday gift I've ever received was an mp3 player, and my single best investment of my life these. Because, from Black Friday onwards, there is no way to so much as sit in a doctor's waiting room without being bombarded with goddamn Christmas music.

But that does not save me from having Christmas-music adoring relatives.

What to do, but frantically compile a play list of music that is distinctly Not Christmas Music, but passably in the holiday spirit. No carols, no muzak, no Nutcracker Suite, and most certainly no Miley Cyrus cover of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." And none of Sarah McLachlan's Christmas album, because it's still too Christmassy. The only problem is having to listen to soundtracks to figure out what bombastic, foreshadowing, or otherwise not exactly cheerful tracks to edit out. Luckily this is often easy to figure out from track titles - if a track says anything like "battle," "fighting," "warriors," "hunters," "war," or "retreat," it's entirely likely it won't be appropriate by the standards of any boring ass relatives you might have... and I certainly do.

Here is a prototype - i.e., far from complete - list made to avoid criticism from very boring people who seem to think - if not openly complain - that I'm the strangest person on earth, currently in beta testing. It's only about 3.6 hours worth, and I have shitloads more material I will never have time to test before they get here.

Artist: Émilie Simon
La Marche de L'Empereur

Use:
"The Frozen World"

Anything else on that soundtrack might get a "What the hell is this shit?" reaction from said boring people. Because, you know, they're boring.

Artist: Björk
Vespertine

Use:
"Frosti"

Even if you're six deep in Björk-haters, they won't even notice this is hers. I promise you this.

Artist: Harry Gregson-Williams
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Use:
"Evacuating London"
"The Wardrobe"
"Lucy Meets Mr. Tumnus"
"A Narnia Lullaby"
"From Western Woods to Beaversdam"
"Only the Beginning of the Adventure"
"Can't Take It In" - Imogen Heap
"Winter Light" - Tim Finn (but be warned, he sounds kind of like a bad Peter Gabriel)
"Where" - Lisabeth Scott

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Use:
"The Kings and Queens of Old"
"Arrival at Aslan's How"
"The Door In the Air"
"The Call" - Regina Spektor
"A Dance 'Round the Memory Tree" - Oren Lavie
"This is Home" - Switchfoot
"Lucy" - Hanne Hukkelberg

Artist (main): Dario Marianelli
V For Vendetta

I am dead serious. A lot of this is unusable, of course. The rest, well, it's very unlikely anyone but you and I will notice what it is.

Use:
"Cry me a River" - Julie London
"Evey Reborn"
"I Found a Reason" - Cat Power
"Bird Gurhl" - Antony and the Johnsons

And, if you're American or Russian, you might be able to get away with "Knives and Bullets (and Cannons Too)," despite of, and maybe even because of, the inclusion of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Russians can do this because it's actually patriotic. Americans who aren't related to any music or history majors can do it, because bizarrely enough, some Americans think it's patriotic, when it has nothing to do with the US. Just say, “Oh, it’s patriotic. Can’t we have a patriotic Christmas? I haven’t had one of those since 2001.”

Artist: Klaus Badelt
Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Use:
"Underwater March"
"One Last Shot"

Artist: Hans Zimmer
Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest

"Two Hornpipes (Tortuga)"

Artist: Hans Zimmer
Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End

"Up is Down"
"One Day"

Artist: Howard Shore
The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

“The Shire”
“Bag End”
“Very Old Friends”
“Flaming Red Hair”
“Three is Company”
“The Passing of the Elves”
“Rivendell”
“The Council of Elron Assembles”
“Gilraen’s Memorial”
“Caras Galadhon”
“Parth Galen”
“The Road Goes Ever on… Part 1”
“May It Be”
“The Road Goes Ever on… Part 2”

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

“Ent Draught”
“Edoras”
“One of the Dбnedain”
“The Chalice Passed”
“Eowyn’s Dream”
“Anduril – Flame of the West”
“The Passing of the Grey Company”
“The Passing of Theoden”
“The Houses of Healing”
“The Last Debate”
“The Eagles”

Of course, anything mentioning orcs or Sarumon is automatically out. Howard Shore works can be maddening to screen. This is because he'll make an eight-minute-long track, and for the first four minutes, you think, wow, this track will work great. Then all of sudden it goes headlong into hellfire-and-brimstone tones that nix that possibility.

I know this doesn't match the information easily found on the soundtracks. Sue me and complain to the Russians who made my ownership of the latter two possible. (A very big Спасибо!!! to you lovely people.) Be grateful, because after the hours of screening all this, I have just about had it with classical music for a long time. I may have to hold off on screening the OST to Northern Lights, I mean the Golden Compass until I can appreciate it again.

For all ye athiests, Buddhists, Pagans, and others forced to deal with playing the Christian game until the year is out, good luck. This is for you.

Result of The Reddening Pt II:

I am quite pleased with it. But still getting used to how dark it is. I've had light or bright unnatural colours for the last half year or so. :P

In other news, it is too fanging hot and my hair does not like it. Kind of regretting getting big heavy fringe right at the start of summer -_-

Back off, I'm a Goddess.

     Dear OK Cupid,

You know what sucks? The fact that your service is not bothered about listing my faith as an option under "religion." But more to the point, how you deal with the feelings of OKC users about what they believe in after that. The options are something like "...but it doesn't matter," "and laughing about it," "and am somewhat serious about it," and "and am very serious about it."

This creates problems with your algorithms when somewhat serious Christians go looking for people who are also somewhat serious about their faith... and subsequently freak out when they find a witch in their search results. You know... to the point where they think proselytising that poor witch is a fucking great idea.

Can I has a better way to go about matching on this topic? Kthx.

result of The Reddening ~

another pic )

It turned out a bit pinker than I wanted. I decided to go with trusty Fudge Paintbox (Red Corvette) because I know that stuff works well on bleached hair. But yeh, slightly too pink. I might try adding a bit of non-Paintbox natural colour dye to make it a bit redder (I bought some Garnier stuff). I think it looks better than the platinum blonde though. :)

I NEED TO RANT

ALL OF THESE COMMENTS PISS ME OFF

"LOLZ how can WoW trigger an ED?!"

"JUST GO EAT SOMETHING!"

"LOLED"

"*insert reaction-icon only in a passive-aggressive manner*"

What.the.fuck.

Try telling a meth addict to just "not use!" Yea right. Jesus.

I won't even get started on the whole "REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES!!!!" thing because I will never shut up about it. I've worked really hard to be at the size that I am (as in...I have put on weight that I didn't have). It's like being stabbed in the heart since apparently I look like a 12-year-old boy with no curves and aren't a "REAL WOMANZ!!!!!11" because my pant size isn't in the double digits.

I just can't win either way! I am glad that people are happy with the size that they are. Beauty comes from within...if you love yourself then then that's the most important thing...self-confidence goes a long way. But gorram. It does go both ways, you know.

Sorry! I'm just so stressed and really on edge and all that didn't help! Seriously, I'm about to burst into tears. I didn't need to read that this week.

Zombies On A Boat

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 9:39 PM
jeski says:
are you there atm?
David says:
Yeh.
jeski says:
I wanted to run an idea by you
that me & my brother came up with today
we figured out this idea for a screenplay we wanna write
it's a zombie movie
working title, "Zombies on a Boat"
lol
Basically, the idea is
there are these five guys
who are housemates
David says:
Snakes on a plane meets Titanic meets the last scene of Dawn of the Dead the remake?
jeski says:
thats the general idea
David says:
So a big boat... right?
jeski says:
the guys are, two gamers, one who plays mostly first person shooters, and one who only plays wow & is obsessed
(i'm getting to the boat)
one who is a goth & is obsessed with zombies/zombie movies/horror in general
David says:
Semiautobigraphical then?
jeski says:
one who is a med student & is very studious
and one who is a bogan with a gun license, and a boat license 8D
anyways
one day they are sitting around drinking
and they are discussing their zombie apocalypse action plan
mostly led by zombie obsessed guy who knows everything about zombies
ie they move slowly, cant use guns, he is very adamant about specific things
and they decide (after lots of arguing & figuring out specifics)
that they will get a shitload of guns
take the med student's dad's four wheel drive
and drive to the harbour
(this is set in sydney at first)
and hijack a fuckoff big cruise ship
at first they want to sail it to the US
but that is too far
so they decide to go to new zealand
David says:
I see the Lonely Island in the soundtrack.
jeski says:
"I'm On A Boat" will definitely feature in it xD
anyways just before they get on the boat
zombie obessed guy is killed
by being run over by a random car
wow obsessed guy thinks they still have enough party members to continue
so they get seperated from bogan guy at this time
David says:
Facepalming right now.
jeski says:
who makes his way to the ship's controls
while the others get lost on the boat, cos it is fuckoff big
there are still a number of tourists on the boat
who are initially angry
until they realise what is happening
anyways they are in contact with bogan guy via mobile, and he gets the boat going
everything goes according to plan, until they are very far out at sea. It's like a day before they realise there are zombies on the boat.
tourists start turning into zombies
things start to get bad
events are hazy at this point, havent really discussed what will happen
but
there will be a storm
David says:
You were drinking, weren't you?
jeski says:
lol
the ship will also be attacked by pirates at some point
not like "arr termites in me leg" pirates
David says:
You should probably call in Chris Schofield as a consultant.
jeski says:
but real pirates
one of whom, when he boards the ship, is bitten by a zombie but shoots him straight away & kicks him off the ship, it is dark & he doesnt realise it was a zombie
things like that
anyways that is the premise
what do you think?
David says:
Has merit.

nice quote from criminal minds.

What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind...
William Wordsworth's poem "Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood"

My girls and the patch

  • Dec. 17th, 2009 at 7:32 AM
Patch 3.3 hit and I hit back!
After a week my little Gnome got Quel'Delar and now rocks like woha! My druid finally got her T9 chest - I kinda only wanted it for style but gettign the tokens for it made me fall in love with druid healing and now she's already healing Halls of Reflexion heroic without that much trouble. Woha! Both their Ilevels skyrocketed.
Anjalie keeps looking evil, but she's lost her edge. I really got to look for my lost shadowlove. I mean spriests rock and she's my baby, but the arcane mage is more fun for damage and the tree for healing. So, meh.

I have a guildie who randomly gives other guildies random grey items. Once, we were raiding and right before the pull he opened trade with me and put in like a level 10 grey sword and some animal parts or something weird. It was so random. It cracks me up. He never says anything other than "Here!" or "Have fun!" I just..lolwat

Was on my tiny Rogue in Org, investigating glyphs in the guildbank and trying to figure out what Adrenaline Rush is and if I have it yet. I get a party invite from him. He runs over to me and trades me [Blue Ribboned Holiday Gift] and drops party without a word. I open it. [Broad Claymore] (a grey).

I almost choked myself laughing. I have no idea why this is so funny to me, but LOLGSOLWHURR. I'm even sober.

Good ideas for holiday shopping

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 8:29 PM
Since shopping at Bath and Body Works is not a great idea (isn't their stuff chock full of mineral oil and parabens, anyway? Loads of artificial fragrances, anyway)...

For good ideas, naturally there is Etsy. Please consider supporting these wonderful people who sell there: Jeski, cobaltika, and bbbbetsy. (List your Etsy shop in comments if you want it added here.)

After that, may I suggest companies who The Hetrick-Martin Institute lists as partners, due to their generosity towards them.

I can't find a similar list on the Humane Society's site, but they do have a shop.

It is my constant chore and passion to collect comics with dinosaurs in them.
Here is a particularly nice one, by Scott C. of Double Fine Productions.
Anna got me his book, along with a signed Brutal Legend poster and magnets and stickers and badges and lots of really cool things. Have I mentioned how awesome she is?

"Rain Flogs My Face..."

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 2:12 AM
Rain flogs my face and collar-bones,
a thunderstorm roars over musts.
You thrust upon my flesh and soul,
like tempests upon ships do thrust.

I do not want, at all, to know,
what will befall to me the next –
would I be smashed against my woe,
or thrown into happiness.

In awe and gaiety elated,
like a ship, that’s going tempests through,
I am not sorry that I’ve met you,
and not afraid to love you, too.

- Bella Akhmadulina
Translation by Yevgeny Bonver

Mmm, yes. Take that, Regina Spektor.
